Advice: Choosing Between pH Strips or pH Meters

pH Strips

pH strips allow you to test the acidity of a particular liquid. pH strips measure on a scale of 14 where seven is neutral. Lower numbers are increasingly acidic, while higher numbers are increasingly alkaline (or basic). Water, being a neutral liquid, should register a seven.

Compare the colour of the strip to the chart provided with the strips. Acids are represented with warmer colours (red, orange, etc) while alkalines are represented with cooler colors (blue, green, etc).

pH strips are very low cost, fast and easy to use, however they offer general visual readings rather than accurate digital readings.

pH Meters

pH Meters give users a far more accurate reading and can be used across a vast variety of applications. They are compact, light weight and very easy to use. Most pH Meters provide accurate pH measurements in a few seconds, from a single 0.1 mL sample. Hand held compact meters also have fast calibration functions plus internal temperature sensors to show the ambient temperature.

The accuracy of digital compact meters generally range from ±0.1 pH to ±0.001 pH (depending on the meters being used).

Applications for compact pH Meters include:

  • Fresh water testing (rain, rivers, lakes, hot springs)
  • aquaria
  • drainage treatment solutions
  • soil testing for improved agriculture
  • fermentation and brewing
  • food freshness testing
  • research laboratories
  • QC of medical supplies and cosmetics
  • preventative dentistry
  • school education
