Using Alcoholometers When Making Hand Sanitizers

Alcoholometers (alcohol hydrometers) are used to read the alcohol content of pure distilled spirits.

Alcoholometers should only be used in pure, distilled spirits when determining the alcohol % or proof of the spirit before it is added to anything else. Alcoholometers are calibrated to the density of pure ethanol and won't sink as deep when water is added to the mixture. All Alcoholometers which are manufactured according to AS2371 are supplied with a Certificate of Conformity.

Using Alcoholometers when making hand sanitzers.

In the case of hand sanitizers, Alcoholometers are perfect when determining the alcohol content before the alcohol is added to any other substances such as Hydrogen Peroxide, Glycerol or Scented Oils. Alcoholometers will give a controlled reading to ensure the correct alcohol percentage is used for each batch made.

Guidelines provided by The World Health Organisation suggest 75% pure ethanol for hand sanitizer mixtures.
