Description
Glass hydrometer made in Australia by Carlton.
A Salinometer 0–100 hydrometer (also called a salometer / brine hydrometer) is a glass float instrument used to measure the salt concentration of a saltwater or brine solution.
The 0 to 100 scale refers to degrees salometer (°SAL):
0 = pure water
100 = fully saturated salt solution
At 100°SAL, the solution is about 26.4% salt by weight
Each 1°SAL = 0.26% salt by weight
This type of hydrometer is commonly used for:
- food brining (meat, fish, pickling)
- industrial salt tanks
- saltwater pools
- salt mixing tanks
- lab salt solutions
- checking salt saturation before adding more salt
Converting the reading to salt % you can use this quick formula:
Salt % by weight = SAL reading × 0.264
Example:
If it reads 20°SAL: 20 × 0.264 = 5.28% salt
