Plastic Beakers and Cylinders: TPX or Polypropylene?

There are various plastic products, such as beakers and measuring cylinders, within the LabDirect store which are available in two types of plastic: TPX (PMP) and Polypropylene. There are a few key differences between the two types of plastic which may or may not be suitable for you.
When choosing the right type of plastic for your application, it's important to know what chemical the plastic is suitable with, what temperature range the plastic can tolerate and what the plastic looks like (if using for a general purpose).
Here are a few key differences between the two:
- Polypropylene has a higher resistance to chemicals
- Polypropylene has a lower temperature tolerance (-10 degrees for PP and 0 degrees for TPX)
- TPX has a higher temperature tolerance (180 degrees for TPX and 140 degrees for PP)
- TPX is a clear plastic while Polypropylene has a milky white colour
If working with high temperatures and/or highly dangerous chemicals or acids, the ultimate storage option would be PTFE (fluroware) items such as PTFE beakers and PTFE storage bottles. Although PTFE products can be expensive, their resistant properties mean that they will last a lifetime.
